A SELF-CARE JOURNEY

The first of many. This is the beginning of my new series of posts relating to self-care- a journey I hope you will all take with me. I hope you enjoy reading!

Let’s admit it- how often do we get time to do things we actually want to do? With such busy schedules and responsibilities, we often get caught up in the hustle and bustle of our hectic lives. Along with being human and having extremely complex emotions and thought processes- this can all build up and equal stress. Not helpful when we already have 1000 things on our minds- right? By practising self-care you can reduce this stress and improve your mental well-being- creating a balance in life that we all desire.

No matter what is on your plate right now, remember that you are important. And for that reason, you should make a conscious effort to schedule well-needed ‘you time’. Even if this is as little as 10 minutes per day. I understand that this isn’t the ‘be all and end all’ of mental health. I do however believe that simple changes can lead to big results.

Below are 10 quick and easy self-care ideas (which I will discuss in future posts, so keep your eyes peeled!). Not everyone enjoys the same thing, therefore some of these ideas will not appeal to you, but I’d say don’t knock it until you try it. I remember thinking meditation was pointless. I thought people sat around with their legs crossed and eyes closed in silence. How is doing nothing going to help in any way? Well since then I’ve gave it a shot, and it has done wonders for me and my outlook on situations. It helps me to develop a different, more positive, perspective when it’s hard to see through the fog. I don’t practice meditation nearly enough as I should- but it helps in tough times. In the words of the fabulous Michelle Obama, “Just try new things. Don’t be afraid. Step out of your comfort zones and soar.”.

face mask

#1 PAMPER

Whether this involves taking a bubble bath, using a face mask or body scrub you’ve not opened from your birthday months ago or even quickly painting your nails before you leave the house. You might feel you need a well-deserved trip to the salon for a professional manicure, pedicure or hair do. Heck- you might even treat yourself to a day in a spa for a relaxing massage. Sorry, I’m day-dreaming now. Bliss.

boyce

#2 LISTEN TO MUSIC

Listen to inspiring, motivating music in the morning to give you the energy and positivity to start the day with a bang. I also like to listen to music when doing assignments or writing for my blog. (P.S- I am listening to Boyce Avenue right now.)

happy thoughts

#3 KEEP A DIARY

A lot of people find it super helpful to keep a diary. Writing down thoughts and feelings is a positive way to channel energy- especially if it’s negative. I write for the web and social media, meaning the whole world can see it, so sometimes it’s good to write something for myself. Write things down with the security that nobody else will see it- not if you don’t want them too. I find it particularly helpful to keep a gratitude diary. It makes me smile when I think about all the good in the world- rather than the bad that controls our media.

exercise

#4 EXERCISE

Ok, so I’m guilty of not doing much of this one, BUT so many people find exercise as a release for their bottled-up emotions. Go to the gym, go for a run or even go to a class nearby. This is also a chance to meet new people with similar interests.

creative

#5 GET CREATIVE

Write, draw, paint, sing, dance, anything! Being creative allows you to channel your emotions, again into something more positive and something that you can be proud of.

cobble

#6 EAT WELL

Eat well- I don’t know about you but I enjoy a meal SO much more when effort and preparation has gone into it. Plan a meal, go out and buy the ingredients and get cracking. Enjoy- then pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

#7 INTERACT WITH YOUR PETS

I was going to write ‘cuddle’ your pets, but I guess that’s not possible with all pets. Play with them, interact with them and of course cuddle if possible. For me, animals are an instant stress reliever. They are so innocent. Without sounding dramatic- if you have a pet as one of your responsibilities, it’s amazing to think that that creature couldn’t survive without you. They rely solely on you to provide them with everything they need. That is pretty special.

treat

#8 TREAT YOURSELF

From time to time we don’t need to feel guilty for treating ourselves. Whether we purchase something as small as a chocolate bar or take the leap and buy the thing you have been saving for. You deserve it.

#9 DREAM

I am such a day-dreamer. I pick up on little things throughout the day and find myself floating into the land of ‘what if’. Dream about your future, and remember that nothing is too big. Think of that amazing car you are working towards, the house you’d love to live in or an amazing 5* holiday you will get to go on.

comfy

#10 BE COMFORTABLE

And, while doing all this, wear comfortable clothing. I feel so much more relaxed when I feel physically comfy. We don’t need to impress co-workers or society 24/7. Shut the curtains, curl up on the sofa and chill out. This time is all about you

I am also organising a self-care bundle GIVEAWAY which will be announced in January 2018 & winner announced in February 2018. This will be updated on this blog- but more regular updates can be seen on instagram.

 Enjoy,

  1. Keeping a diary is a great tip, I used to write in a diary every day where as now I tend to use my blog instead. I need to find more time for me.

  2. Ive started going to the gym three times a week (since around three months ago now) and I feel so much better for it. I haven’t lost much weight but it’s become more about how good it makes me feel, which is great!

    1. I find blogging VERY therapeutic too! I was bought a journal for Christmas which I am going to start writing in when there is something worth writing. I’m not using it as a sort of diary that I write in every day xxx

  3. Agree with all these self care tips it’s so necessary as I’ve written extensively about self care and still have a draft post on this topic. For me as a working mom I have to take care of my mind body and soul in order to be a good mom and employee.

  4. Self care is something I used to make sure I made time for but over November/December I just forgot. It sounds terrible but I forgot to take time for me. But I can say already on day 3 of 2018 and I’ve managed to find the time to fit me in. I used to love reading, so I purchased a few books and have got stuck into one of those. These are great tips for self care, I especially like the treating ones self.

  5. This is such a helpful post. I’m down with the “interact with your pets” idea. I’m usually a fairly mellow person but if I get really agitated, I hang out with my dogs as they’re so calm and happy all the time. It’s hard to not be relaxed when you have 2 sleeping puppies next to you!
